Excuses

Definition: an attempt to lessen the blame attaching to (a fault or offense); seek to defend or justify

The best excuses:

1) Demonstrate your understanding of the problem AND the other person's feelings.

2) You acknowledge your responsibility in the situation.

3) You acknowledge your own displeasure in what you did.

4) You will make it clear that you will not repeat the same mistake

5) Now apologize

My favorite excuses that I have used:

I didn't do it: I would blame my older brother for everything. If I ate all the gushers before dinner, I would blame it on my older brother.

It wasn't bad: If I broke something in the house I would admit and after that, I would say it wasn't that bad. Meaning it can be fixed.

Yes but: To take the blame off of me, when I get in trouble I would say to my mom, yes but, my older brother did this which is way worse.

  1. Great review of this topic! How does it connect back to you and your experiences, though?
