New Zealand

New Zealand has one of the biggest town names which is called Taumata in the short version. The tasty pie is a New Zealand icon. Food that is popular in New Zealand is Fish and Chips, pavlova, fruit salad, and artisan cheese. The languages that are spoken in New Zealand are English, Māori, and New Zealand Sign Language. New Zealand celebrates a day called Waitangi Day. It is the anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. New Zealanders wear modern Western-style clothing. Every ethnic group in New Zealand uses its own folk costumes and has its own traditions. Patting someone’s head can be interpreted as disrespectful. Raising a middle finger or making the V-sign with a person’s palm facing towards them is considered unethical and rude. Once you have developed a personal relationship with New Zealanders they are seen as friendly, kind, outgoing, and social. They have a large amount of respect for honest people. I would like to visit New Zealand and meet the people there because they seem kind and considerate. I would like to learn more about Waitangi Day and what they do to celebrate it.

My culture that was chosen from the globe was Brazil. Brazil is known for the scent of its amazing street food, which is popular in Brazilian culture. Brazil is known for its delicious food, a popular dish is called Feijoada. This dish contains black beans cooked with many different types of pork, it also contains tomatoes, cabbages, and carrots. The top three languages are Portuguese, German, and Indigenous Languages. A celebration in Brazil is called Tiradentes’ Day. It is the anniversary of the death of Tiradentes. Another celebration in Brazil is called Our Lady of Aparecida. It commemorates the Virgin Mary. The last celebration is called All Souls’ Day. It is a Christian Holiday. The traditional outfits in Brazil are bombachas pants, baiana dress, poncho, Carmen Mirada costume, and cowboy hats. Common clothing in Brazil among women are short skirts and dresses. Men are commonly known to wear jeans and T-shirts. The social cues of Brazil are the touching of the arms and backs are common. Public displays of affection such as kissing are acceptable. Brazilians are more physical touch in conversation's they like to generally be close to each other. It is interesting to learn about Brazil’s culture and how they live daily. I would like to learn more about Brazil’s food and I want to understand why the food is popular.

Ambiguity

Ambiguity is when something has more than one meaning. Ambiguity can be confusing to many people and the meaning of sentences can be unclear. It was interesting to understand the concept of ambiguity in class. Ambiguity will help me as a communicator because now I will understand that I need to be more clear about what I am trying to say. Instead of having bland answers that can mean many different things. My favorite example in class was when we talked about the sign for vehicles that said reserved for green vehicles which can mean many different things. This was a new concept that I have never heard of before. Now, that I understand the concept that something can have more than one meaning, I will try to be more clear in my daily life. An example of this that happens on a typical day would be at work when I am speaking with the children. I will say something to a child and they look at me with a confused expression, now I understand why. 😯

Human Communication ~ Public Speaking

In class, we talked about the different forms of human communication, there are many different types of communication. There is intrapersonal communication, interpersonal communication, interviewing communication, small group communication, organizational communication, computer-mediated communication, public speaking communication, and mass communication. I have experienced these forms of communication at least once or more in my life. Today, I am going to talk about one type of communication that I have a difficult time with. I am good at communicating with a small group of people but, when it comes to public speaking I get extremely nervous. I start shaking when I have to present in front of a class and I start to forget things. I get very nervous when I have to speak in front of a group of people and I lose my train of thought. I’m not sure why this happens because I am a very outgoing person. I start doubting myself and then I start to stutter my words. I am sure public speaking is a good thing to learn in school because it helps students develop it for the future. It’s just a form of communication that is hard for me to understand and to do.

Physical Noise

In class, we learned about the different types of noise, what shocked me the most was that there are so many different types of noise. There is physical noise, physiological noise, psychological noise, and semantic noise. Today, I am going to tell you about the type of noise that I have on a daily basis. I work at a daycare center and physically there is noise everywhere. I hear screaming kids all day long from the kids being excited and happy to the kids being sad. I love my job but, there is always physical noise. Children are loud and extremely wild. Children scream very loud when they don’t always get their way. Children also laugh very loud when they are happy. I enjoy my job and I love working with children and watching them grow.
